I’m Madeleine Gooding (formerly Robinson), a qualified child and adolescent counsellor offering therapy for children, teenagers, young people, and parents in Cambridge and online. I also provide clinical supervision for individuals and small groups, supporting therapists working with children, adolescents, or adults in schools, charities, and private practice.
I have over a decade of experience supporting children with a wide range of emotional and behavioural needs, including ADHD, autism, SEN, and children with an EHCP.
I create a calm, nurturing space for children and adolescents who may be struggling with anxiety, anger, low self-confidence, friendship difficulties, or emotional distress. Whether your child is experiencing school challenges, a recent family change, or something harder to name, I offer a space where they can feel safe, seen, and supported.
As a parent, it can be hard to know where to turn. I work collaboratively with families to offer both therapeutic and practical support, including parent consultations and guidance around educational pathways.
I currently work in private practice, as a Senior Clinical Lead for Blue Smile, and as a therapist at St Mary’s School, an independent girls’ school in Cambridge.
If you’re looking for child or adolescent counselling, online therapy, or clinical supervision in Cambridge, I’d be happy to talk.
I’m a qualified child and adolescent psychotherapeutic counsellor with over ten years of experience. I hold a Master’s in Education (MEd) and a Diploma in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling from the University of Cambridge, and I work with children, teenagers, young people, and their parents in both Cambridge and online.
In addition to my counselling work, I am a qualified clinical supervisor, offering supervision to both individuals and small groups, including those working in schools or with children, adolescents, and families. My supervision style is reflective, supportive, and collaborative — providing a space for therapists to feel resourced, curious, and held in their work..
Since qualifying in 2016, I’ve worked across a range of settings, including independent and state schools, children’s charities, and private practice. I currently work as a Senior Clinical Lead at Blue Smile (a Cambridge-based children’s counselling charity), in private practice, and as the school counsellor at St Mary’s School, an independent girls’ school in Cambridge.
My therapeutic approach is creative, relational, and grounded in a deep respect for each young person’s inner world. I use a blend of play, creative arts, and talking therapy, adapting my methods to meet the emotional and developmental needs of each child or teenager.
I have a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent young people, including those with ADHD, autism, Tourette’s, dyspraxia, and those with an EHCP. I also regularly support clients with anxiety, low mood, aggression, bullying, friendship struggles, and self-confidence issues.
Alongside direct client work, I’m passionate about supporting therapists — particularly those at the beginning of their careers or working in schools — through clinical supervision that offers both structure and spaciousness.
I believe that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to therapy — especially when working with children, teenagers, and young people. As an integrative child and adolescent counsellor, I tailor my approach to meet the individual needs of each client and their family. I offer counselling in Cambridge and online, drawing on a range of therapeutic models to ensure the most effective, compassionate support.
My work is informed by a blend of theories, including Psychoanalytic, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Adlerian, Person-Centred, and Humanistic approaches. I also offer BrainWorking Recursive Therapy® (BWRT®), a structured and forward-focused method particularly helpful for anxiety and trauma.
I use a variety of techniques in my sessions, integrating creative arts, play therapy, and traditional talk therapy to meet children and young people where they are developmentally and emotionally.
Over the years, I’ve developed a particular interest in working with neurodiverse clients, especially those with ADHD, autism, or Special Educational Needs (SEN). My time spent in specialist schools has given me insight into the wider educational context, including how to support families through the EHCP process and school transitions.
I work within both short-term and long-term therapy frameworks, depending on the client’s goals. My practice is grounded in warmth, curiosity, and an ongoing commitment to professional development. I also offer clinical supervisionfor counsellors working with children, adolescents, or adults, creating space for thoughtful, reflective practice.
If you’re considering counselling for yourself, your child, or if you're a therapist seeking supervision, I’d be happy to speak with you. All emails and phone calls are confidential. Please feel free to get in touch — I aim to respond to all enquiries within 48 hours.
Being a parent or carer isn’t easy — and there’s no rulebook to follow. Children and young people are growing up in increasingly complex and fast-paced environments, and we’re often expected to guide them through challenges we may never have faced ourselves. It’s natural to feel unprepared, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to do next.
In my practice, I offer a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where you can talk openly about what’s going on for your child, teenager, or family as a whole. Whether you’re dealing with challenging behaviour, emotional distress, ADHD, SEN, or school-related issues, I can work with you to explore ways of supporting your child that are both effective and aligned with your values.
Some issues parents and carers have shared with me include:
This list is not exhaustive. Whatever challenges you or your child are facing — whether behavioural, emotional, or related to neurodiversity such as ADHD, autism, or SEN — I am here to listen and support you. If your family requires more specialised input, I’ll always do my best to connect you with trusted professionals across mental health, education, or therapeutic services in Cambridge and online.
Finding the right child therapist is a vital step in supporting your young person’s emotional wellbeing. Children and adolescents need someone they can trust, connect with, and feel safe around. I understand how daunting it can be for a child to begin counselling, which is why I take a gentle, creative, and relational approach to building that all-important connection.
In my therapy room, I offer a range of carefully chosen toys, creative arts materials, and activities to help children and teenagers express themselves. These tools are tailored to suit each young person’s developmental stage, emotional needs, and interests — particularly helpful for children with SEN, ADHD, or those who find verbal communication difficult.
The first few sessions are focused on getting to know one another and developing a strong therapeutic relationship. We typically begin with an initial block of six weekly sessions, each lasting 45 minutes. After this period, I offer a review with parents or carers to reflect on how things are going and whether the approach feels right for your child.
If at that point we feel I may not be the best fit, I will always be honest and supportive — helping you consider other child counsellors in Cambridge or online therapists who may be better suited to your child’s needs. My priority is always what’s best for your young person.
Sessions take place weekly, at the same time and place each week, as consistency is key to building trust and therapeutic progress. Should I ever need to cancel, I will do my best to offer an alternative within the same week, wherever possible.
If you’d like to talk further or explore whether therapy might benefit your child, I’d be happy to arrange an initial parent consultation.
Clinical Supervision
With a Postgraduate Diploma and an MEd in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling from the University of Cambridge, and a Diploma in Clinical Supervision from Terapia, I offer individual and group supervision to counsellors, psychotherapists, and mental health professionals working with children, teenagers, young adults (aged 5–25) and their parents or carers.
My supervision practice is grounded in creativity, collaboration, and curiosity. Whether you’re in training or an experienced practitioner, I aim to create a dynamic and supportive space where we can explore your work in depth, reflect on therapeutic relationships, and uncover new perspectives on your clients' emotional worlds.
I bring a wealth of clinical experience from diverse settings, including state and independent schools, and children’s charities such as Blue Smile and The Cambridge Acorn Project. I have also consulted for organisations on mental health and wellbeing, which brings a broader systems-based perspective to my supervision work.
In both individual and small group supervision, I integrate creative tools, somatic approaches, and the use of metaphors and analogy to help make sense of the therapeutic process. These methods can unlock deeper insight into your clients and support you in feeling resourced, confident, and connected to your own therapeutic style.
I offer clinical supervision in Cambridge and online, with flexible options for:
